The age of DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ dawned five years ago; Makin’ Magick is the first of many sprawling deepwave and outsider house epics to come in the five years since. With its runtime akin to No Country For Old Men, about a half hour shy of There Will Be Blood, listeners are truly lending an ear to these songs in a big way. Numerous tracks clock in between five and ten minutes and reward the listener’s attention with endless streams of kaleidoscopic grooves inside of a carousel of intriguing samples. With its constant infusion of early internet era pop culture, DJ Sabrina tells a story through a pervasive atmosphere. Makin’ Magick is flush with nostalgia, unfolding like dreams of dancing all night and all day somewhere in the cosmos. Songs journey a ways to conclusion, transitioning from one to the next as sonic vignettes that lend themselves to an even larger tale. Five years later, it is remembered as the first planet in a universe of metaphysical time capsules hand crafted by the London DJ. – DeVán (7.5/10)
