100 gecs’ 10,000 gecs is yet another whirlwind of outrageous ideas; and, is mostly very likable. The LA-based (by way of St. Louis) duo’s winning formula marries sounds and styles that “don’t” go together, walking a razor’s edge between meme music and uniquely clever songwriting. What drives 10,000 gecs to be more than novelty is the group’s genuinely diverse handle on the sounds they so garishly combine. Guitar play here is serviceable through stark transitions from ska, to nu metal, and alternative rock. The highly energetic and silly songwriting that propelled their debut is present in the sequel, though with a slightly angstier slant in some key moments. The duo clocks out before overstaying their welcome, wisely capping this smörgåsbord of pastiches at 10 tracks in under 27 minutes. Ultimately, 10,000 gecs is oddly satisfying and skin crawling, once again, in (mostly) the best of ways. – DeVán (7/10)
