Fifteen years ago, Lupe Fiasco was Chicago’s chosen one, a prophetic young figure in the tale of modern hip-hop. Today, Lupe’s legacy has transcended closer to elder statesman status, and it’s exciting to see this transition happening gracefully. DRILL MUSIC IN ZION is Lupe’s return from a four-year hiatus, in which he continues to shape his monologues around the current state of art, history, capitalism, and ethics. Unlike most other Lupe records, DRILL MUSIC IN ZION is relatively breezy, spanning 40 minutes across ten tracks, with Lupe dialing in his diatribes at newly efficient rates. Rap is still a young person’s game, Lupe accepts this, but remains one of the genre’s strongest counter cultural forces. – DeVán (8/10)
