Lots of hands. Two people outdoors, one with curly red hair, the other with dark hair. Both wear sweaters. Sunny field and trees in the background. Relaxed mood.

BLIGATORY Picks

Aunt Katrina - "Ran Out of Time"

Indie Rock, Dream Pop, Art Rock
via Crafted Sounds

write-up by Dominick Baglivo

Last month, Aunt Katrina announced their first full-length release, This Heat Is Slowly Killing Me. Following the tender and beautifully melancholic lead single, “Peace of Mind,” the DMV-based band shares a slightly heavier, and similarly heartbroken, track with “Ran Out of Time.”

“This song is an exasperated plea for wanting someone back,” says frontman Ryan Walchonski.

Aunt Katrina began as the solo work of Walchonski, ex-guitarist of Feeble Little Horse, who amicably stepped away from the Pittsburgh noise-pop group earlier this year. In 2023, he shared the Hot EP and delivered a dazzling display of electronic-infused, noisy, indie rock.

Now joined by Ray Brown (Snail Mail) on drums and Eric Zidar (Tosser) on guitar—and joined by Nick Miller, Laney Ackley, and Emma Banks for live performances—Aunt Katrina reintroduce themselves as a wholly collaborative unit ahead of their debut album.

With some serious ‘album of the year’ potential behind it, This Heat Is Slowly Killing Me is out July 11 via Crafted Sounds. Ahead of its release, Aunt Katrina will play an album release show—with support from Lean Tee and Berra—on July 5 at Songbyrd in D.C.

Fuzz Lightyear - "Berlin, 1885"

Noise Rock, Post-Hardcore
via Nice Swan Recordings

write-up by Peter Doherty

Leeds’ Fuzz Lightyear turn up the distortion dials and lock in on the relentless "Berlin, 1885." Like a disc jockey using the factory floor as a turntable, Fuzz Lightyear whip up industrial soundscapes like it's nobody's business.

Frontman Ben Parry had this to say about the track:

“Most of our songs are about personal internal worlds, but this is our first song grappling with wider political society. I used to be a very political person, but after years of constant hate by the right, and with little sign of solutions, I lost that passion. It’s hard to stay in the fight when it feels like nothing’s changed. This song is something of a wakeup call to myself, and to anyone else as apathetic as me, to keep going."

"Berlin, 1885" is out now via Nice Swan.

Fuzz Lightyear have a handful of festival appearances towards the end of August and October. August 27 sees Fuzz play Rock n Roll Circus in Sheffield alongside bands such as shame, Viagra Boys, and Queens of the Stone Age. August 30 has Manchester Psych Fest on the cards. Late October dates include Rotterdam's Left of the Dial and Paris' They're Gonna Be Big.

Connie Roses - Memories From My Stones

Instrumental Hip-Hop
via Paluxy Records

Pittsburgh-based rapper and producer Connie Roses shares his third project of 2025 with Memories From My Stones, a smooth and varied collection of instrumentals.

On his Bandcamp, Roses writes:

“This tape was made over the course of 5 years and is a selection of beats I found most intriguing through their movement and textures. I've always made beats and instrumentals, but never have released them officially.

I'm very proud to have made something that makes me reflect on the times I would run in the Texas woods in 100 degree heat, or wake up on my old apartment floor and ride the bike my father had gifted me from Goodwill. There are a lot of old and meaningful ideas found in this tape, I hope it brings back something for you as well.”

IDM, Neo-Psychedelia
via Dummy Records

Last September, Dummy released their sophomore album, Free Energy, a crystalline display of noise pop and psychedelic bliss. This week, the Los Angeles band presents a full reimagining of Free Energy and its 12 tracks, stretching them into further abstraction with remixes from Insides, Wishy, The Mall, and more.

Pip Blom - Grip (EP)

Musical Attack: Communist + Anarchist Friendship is out July 11 via Post Present Medium.

Cruelster - "Nuclear Word"

Hardcore Punk, Garage Punk
via Convulse Records

You love to see it! One of the finest names in ‘weird punk,’ Cleveland’s Cruelster, link up with the Denver-based Convulse Records—a leading force in hardcore for the past few years, with releases from GEL, MSPAINT, Gumm, Pardoner, and many more.

The Cruelster camp has kept busy with recent releases from closely affiliated acts KNOWSO (double single last week), Perverts Again (album in April), and The Carp (debut album last year). Last year, Cruelster also shared Lost Inside My Mind in Another State of Mind: The Singles Collection. But aside from that compilation, the most recent Cruelster release came in 2018 with the delightfully bizarre, politically-charged egg punk of Riot Boys.

“Nuclear Word” is the lead single from Make Them Wonder Why, the latest addition to this extended universe. Boasting 21 tracks, with titles such as “I’m Going to Ukraine,” “Khufu Failed,” and “Belarus With My Baby,” it’s looking primed for that distinct and strange explosiveness I expect from the group.

Make Them Wonder Why is out July 11 on Convulse Records. Cruelster’s release party for the album is on July 19 at Grog Shop with support from Artificial Go, SLUG, and CUTUP.

Deradoorian - "Center of the Universe"

Neo-Psychedelia
via Fire Records

Just a little over a month after sharing her third solo album, we get a new track from Angel Deradoorian (one half of Decisive Pink, formerly of Dirty Projectors) in the form of a Giant Sand cover. The title track from Giant Sand’s 1992 album, this version is part of an upcoming Fire Records release titled Sandworms: The Songs of Howe Gelb and Giant Sand. Out August 15, the compilation also features new renditions from Water From Your Eyes, Lily Konigsberg, The Golden Dregs, and more.

Karate - "First Time"

Post-Hardcore, Indie Rock
via Numero Group

Following last month’s “Remembering To Forget,” and “Dating Is Stupid” the month prior, the Boston post-hardcore/jazz-rock band Karate share another archival track. Similarly, “First Time” comes with little additional info, but certainly points to a larger project. Originally active from 1993 to 2005, Karate regrouped in 2022 and released their first new material in two decades with last year’s Make It Fit.

mall goth - "Your Garden"

Power Pop, Jangle Pop, Slacker Rock
Self-Released

mall goth deliver a burst of jangly power pop “Your Garden,” the Albany-based band’s first release of 2025. Another strong addition to their small but mighty catalog that includes three singles from last year and a stellar self-titled EP released in 2023.

Tummyache - "Happy Birthday"

Noise Rock, Shoegaze
via eNtiTy Records

Tummyache is a DIY four-piece led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Soren Bryce, alongside Linus Fenton (bass), Bianka Baranova (guitar), and Arthur James (drums). Since the project’s inception in 2018, Bryce and co. have shared one EP, two albums, and sit amongst an impressive catalog of Speedy Wunderground singles with the 2023 one-off, “Circling the Drain.”

Gearing up for their third record, Tummyache has announced FAKE NEW alongside a blast of angsty fuzz in “Happy Birthday.” In promotional material, the album is said to explore “how social media, technology, and the constant churn of online culture have distorted human connection, eroded truth, and reshaped the way we see ourselves and each other.”

FAKE NEW is out August 8. On the same night, Tummyache will play a release show at the George Tavern in London, with support from Lonnie Gunn and Big Huge New Circle. Keeping in theme with the record, no phones will be allowed at the show.

Peter's Picks

Cardinals - "Big Empty Heart"

Post-Punk Revival
via So Young Records

Having released their self-titled debut EP in June 2024, Cork-based five-piece Cardinals release their first bit of material in 2025, "Big Empty Heart."

Cardinals head on tour in September, seeing the band hit North America, the UK, and Australia. Dates include Groningen (September 4), Chicago (September 9), Bristol (September 22) and Sydney (October 15).

"Big Empty Heart" is out now via So Young Records.

Chamber Pop, Art Rock
Self-Released

Goat Girl re-imagine their 2024 album, Below the Waste, and handpick four tracks to make up their upcoming EP, Below the Waste (Orchestrated). "sleep talk," "perhaps," "tcnc," and "wasting" are the four tracks to be re-thunk and orchestrated. Things change greatly depending on how the conduit for said thing is traversed.

Goat Girl tour North America in October, hitting cities such as Montreal, Brooklyn, and Portland.

Patrick Gosling - "Grim Reaper"

Indie Rock
via Box Room Recordings

Self-professed "singer songwriter guy" Patrick Gosling returns with his second single of 2025, "Grim Reaper." With certain pop sensibilities, among a range of more fuzzed-up, country elements, Gosling exudes that easy-rider ethos.

When writing the song, Patrick decided to employ the stream of consciousness effect. He described the process as generating random thoughts and then “gluing all the nonsense together.”

My-my oh mama, "Grim Reaper" is out now via Box Room Recordings.
