“Droptober” after “droptober,” fans faithfully awaited the third major label offering from Smino who is—without exaggeration—St. Louis’ all-time finest. The two preceding studio records by Zero Fatigue’s president were fired off in relatively quick succession. 2017 and ‘18 saw the birth of blkswn and Noir, respectively; both albums displayed the versatility, creativity, and potential that is currently as close to completely maximized as we’ve seen yet. Luv 4 Rent is Smino’s first release under Motown, with a continuous flow of boundless and vibrant energy inside. From the wild and vivacious “Pro Freak” (with Doechii and Fatman Scoop), and the alternative euphoria of “Louphoria” (with Cruza), to the double-timed and punchy “Pudgy” (with Lil Uzi Vert), Luv 4 Rent never settles. Smino’s triple-threat of rapping, singing, and songwriting are fleshed out wonderfully, making Luv 4 Rent worth the six-year wait it took to get here. – DeVán (8.5/10)
