Philadelphia's Kicker released their latest album Eurostep in September of 2025. Worlds of Indie splendour await those willing to tune in. In the usual fashion that these things work; Peter had the questions, Kicker had the insights.

Q: First of all, how are you?

I am well! Thank you for asking :)

Q: Your latest album, Eurostep, was released in September 2025. How was the overall process of its coming-to-be for you? Were there any things about it that stand out in your memory?

The process definitely took some time. I started writing most of these songs before our first album was released, but they definitely changed over time. I feel like that’s pretty normal. The standout moment for me was recording at Retro City in Germantown with producer/engineer Jake Hoffpauir. I had never been in a studio like that and honestly it was kinda scary for me to record somewhere that nice. But it was awesome. I remember feeling really cool there.

Q: The Philadelphia scene seems to have hit a creative spurt/spark and has become a hotspot for up-and-coming creatives. What do you think are some of the reasons for this?

I think there are a few main reasons. There’s such a strong foundation of bands from Philadelphia, and there’s also a pretty deep sense of community especially with the early college/house show scene. The Machine, Couple Ghouls, and 4333 were huge for helping me gain a sense of confidence with playing shows. But there’s also just a lot of talented, creative people outside of music that make amazing art and it seems kinda like everyone is inspired by eachother. I really love seeing everyone growing together as creatives and as people.

Q: What are some of your favourite aspects of said Philly scene?

Definitely the people. I’ve met some of my best friends through music and I can’t imagine how boring my life would be if we never crossed paths. I also love DIY spaces like Minimart and Cousin Danny’s.

Q: Can you give me three of your current favourite Philly bands?

Snoozer and 22º Halo have been huge for me over the last couple years, but Trusselina is my favorite band in Philly right now. Seeing them live blew me away.

Q: I hear the shy and reserved qualities of a Yo La Tengo inside of your music. Who and what would you say influences the aesthetic and soundworld of Kicker?

I would say my mom and dad were a huge influence on my taste. I remember being in elementary school and my parents taking me to see Weezer, Dinosaur Jr, and Pavement like all within a year. That definitely changed my brain big time. I remember doing Rock and Roll After School summer camp after seeing those bands and just trying so hard to emulate those guys while ripping the worst solos of all time. I was pretty embarrassed of those shows for a while, but honestly now it’s pretty funny to look back on.

Q: Why is "Mirror" the track you chose to have a reprise on Eurostep and not a track like "Gurney" or even "Calico." What stood out about "Mirror" to give it a second life on the album?

I played the “Mirror” demo in reverse on my computer and I really liked how the vocal melody sounded backwards. It’s such a simple song and I just really liked the idea of making it super fried.

Q: Final question! What can we expect from Kicker moving forwards? Are there any projects that you're currently working on? What does 2026 hold for you?

I’m currently in the process of writing a new record, and I’m hoping to play some more fun shows in 2026. Outside of music, I’m hoping 2026 will bring joy, growth, peace, love and blessings to all. Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me!
